David's interest in antiques started when he was just twelve. He entered the profession after leaving school and was one of the youngest at 21, to qualify by examination of the professional body known as The Incorporated Society Of Valuers And Auctioneers. Later to be amalgamated with the Chartered Surveyors where David became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chartered Surveyors Fine Arts Disipline. David worked for a local firm in Rugby before leaving for London in 1974. Four years later he was head hunted by an auction house in Royal Leamington Spa. David became manager and valuer and later a partner, remaining there for nearly twenty five years.
In that time it is not surprising that David built up an immense knowledge on art, antiques and collectables. So much so, that his fellow experts on Bargain Hunt and Flog It! called him 'The Master'. David started out on the early Bargain Hunt programmes as an auctioneer. But it was soon apparent that David would be a perfect expert and so it proved to be.
David ceased being an auctioneer in early 2003 to start his own business as an independent professional valuer, as well as being a regular on Bargain Hunt, Flog It and The Antiques Road Trip. David J Barby & Associates were based in Rugby and provided valuations nationwide.
