The morning chores are over
and I can settle down,
To watch my favourite,
Bargain Hunt as it goes from town to town.
I love to spot the bargains
and have really learnt a lot ,
On Moorcroft
, Poole and Carlton ware I'm getting rather hot!
But for all the lovely
merchandise what really turns me on,
Is a certain dashing
gentleman that I can gaze upon.
Debonair, dashing and
charming he's a treat to listen to,
Amusing, witty and an all
round guy with a wealth of knowledge too.
I watch him in the sale
rooms and listen to his sound advice,
He really seems to know his
stuff and is spot on with the price.
My heart is all a flutter
between the silver and Crown Derby,
No Duke, I'm sorry it isn't
you but dashing David Barby.
Rosie.
Dear David,
My 20 year old daughter and I watch Bargain Hunt every week night here in
Liverpool (Sydney Australia) and now 20th Century Roadshow has started, we
get to see you again! What a treat! Love your sense of humour and how
right you get things. Wish I had you with me on my rounds!
Wonder if you could send my daughter, Livia, an autograph as she is a
collector. She would really love to have yours. Thanks sooo much. Keep up
the great work.

David Barby: a true
gentleman
I have just returned from the Leamington Spa valuation day. David Barby
was one of the valuers, and just happens to be my 10 year old niece's
favourite! While I was enjoying the beauty that is Paul Martin, my niece
was plucking up the courage to go and say hello to Mr Barby. She went over
to him and he was absolutely lovely to her. He posed for a photo with her,
and wrote a message in the autograph book, joking and smiling all the
time. He made her day!!
Darius Fan
Oh Darius Fan you lucky
thing! Getting to meet the lovely David, tell me now that you've met him,
is he a total babe ?
Lance
He looks much younger in the
flesh than on TV. I can see why your pants ping whenever he comes on
screen! His clothes were immaculate and he didn't have a hair out of
place.
Darius Fan
Mmm he sounds even more
dreamy in real life, my pants are pinging just reading your description,
you've brightened my day...Thank You.
Lance
Nice to see you today,
Darius! We didn't get to talk to David, he was very busy while we were
there. But he is, indeed, a charming man and the next time we see him in
Sainsburys we will definitely talk to him
Tracey
My only regret is that Mark
Stacey wasn't there. Mark, David and Paul- a winning combination!Just got
my photos back from Leamington and David Barby looks so cute!
Darius Fan |

Congratulations on your superb Website !! I have just found it and am
about to have a longer look round :o) . David seems to be a really nice
man and so easy to talk to I believe...Regards to you all,

Hi Jenny
Just to let you know I've
sent you another photo out of the paper. By an amazing coincidence just
seconds after my 8 year old put the envelope in the letterbox in
Sainsbury's, he spotted the man himself!! I was standing by the bananas
talking to a friend and David was next to the apples - Elliot was so
excited he came up to me and said "Can I say hello to David Barby - it's
ok, we know him!" I had to explain that David doesn't know us even
though he's on our telly all the time! When I'd finished talking to my
friend I sneaked round to the apples section and had a look but he was
deep in conversation with an elderly lady so I didn't try to say hello.
Elliot (against my advice) kept running round to see if he was still
there while we carried on with our shopping!

I may have
waited in the queue for an hour and a half, I may have missed the
wonderful sunshine, being stuck inside a packed Salisbury
Guildhall, but I couldn't grumble anymore when I got to meet the
lovely David Barby. He was really sweet and signed both
my autograph book and a photo, plus very kindly let me have this
photograph taken with him - what a star!! He told me he looked
forward to seeing it up on the website, so David, as a thank you
for being so kind, here it is!
Libby
PS I hope
you had a great time on your birthday!'

Dear Jenny,
Whilst searching for anything remotely to do with Paul Martin and
FlogIt! I came across your David J Barby website, and wow, what a
fantastic website it is!
I was
particularly interested in the filming of Flog It! and the Flog It!
archive, brilliant!!!

|
Just thought I'd
let you know that I was well impressed today with David's sheer
wealth of knowledge and don't think the cameras do him any justice!!
Thought you might like this Barby inspired ditty of mine -
Mr Barby he's
our man, if he can't value it, no one can!

Thank-you so
much for the gorgeous prize! It made me so happy! It arrived
through the post really quickly and was so carefully wrapped it
came to no harm! I luv it! It's delicate and beautiful and I'm so
chuffed, so thanks and thanks to David!

Hello Jenny
I live in Rugby and work at the Rugby Sales Rooms for MG
Seaman. They are selling a lot on eBay and needed my assistance to
help. I watched a lot of antique shows in my student days a couple
years ago. And I never realised David was from Rugby. He's very
funny. And quite a character. I've never met him though. He is an
expert at his field which is admirable.
Well I liked your site. Keep up the good work.

Hi Jenny!
I've just
discovered your David Barby website - it's excellent, well done!!
I am a fairly new fan of Flog It! I started watching it last
October but I'm already an addict!! My husband and 2 young sons
are also fans - especially since David Barby is a local boy and
we've seen him (or think we have) in Sainsbury's.
As charming and
lovely as David is, my particular favourite is the gorgeous Paul
Martin - is there any chance of a website dedicated to him?
Once again,
well done Jenny, you obviously put in a lot of time and effort and
I will continue to visit your site for news. I would be very
pleased if you could send me a signed photo of David - I don't
suppose you have any of Paul?!Best wishes Tracey

Hi Jenny
Your wish has
been granted, Mr Barby appears as an Elizabethan toff, with poor
Philip as his Baldrick! (superb stuff). The delicious Kate Alcock
won that show though. Who needs endless crass soap operas and all
that dreadful big brother bilge, long live Flog It
Regards to all (inc Algy)
Dave Scott
I said it was a pity
they didn't make another Bargain Hunt Christmas Panto. Then on
came the Flog it from Birmingham! To see our trio dressed up,
visit the News Page.
|
|
David
Keep up the good
work, we are addicted to the shows, my favourite was your Pantomime
wicked step mother on Bargain Hunt, I think with Kate Philip & Hoggy,
Superb! (the best show over that Christmas)
best wishes to Algernon
all the best, Dave Scott

Hi Jenny.
I saw David on
Flog It last week dressed up In Medieval Costume, along with
Philip Serrell and Kate Alcock. This was to do with how people
dressed in the middle ages. David and Philip not only were dressed
up they took part in a Middle Ages fashion show, they made great
models and Barbs as Philip calls David was superb he was looking
really dapper and Kate who was presenting Flog along with David
and Philip looked as if they were having a great time. It was
wonderful viewing.
Best Wishes from
Joanne.

Hi Jenny I
enjoyed reading the interview with David and Janet, it was very
well done, I liked the pictures and you had a great time with
them. I am ever so pleased to see my photo of David on the home
page thank you.
Best Wishes from Joanne

Hello
Marian and Rob
Boston here. Thank you so much for a wonderful day on Thursday in
Cambridge, (16th December 2005), (ships!).
I know we only had
a few moment with you but it has made us famous in our respective
offices!
I have just spent
the last hour scrubbing the pots and jug and bowl I bought in the
auction, but the 1736 Mortgage Agreement is an absolute delight and we
will treasure it always.
Best wishes to the
team, who are great.
Marian and Rob Boston
PS: Health and Peace and
all the very best to you for 2005.

Dear Jenny and David
Barby,
We are the two ladies from Notions of Grantham ( Bargain Hunt live, 1st
November 2005), Kelly and Pat. It was lovely to have met you both when
you were in Grantham. My Mother was so pleased to meet you and
we
both think David is a real gentleman You have a great website. Flog It
and Bargain Hunt are great as well. Keep Keep up the good work on T.V.
Best Wishes,
Kelly and Pat. |

This
is a great website! I have been a fan of Bargain Hunt for quite some
time and recently began watching Flog It. Both are wonderful shows
that are not only entertaining, but informative and educational as
well. Well, most of the time they are!
Here in the US, we get the shows quite some time after
you do in the UK. But that doesn’t matter as the show has maintained
its great qualities through the seasons, especially when David is on
as either an expert or, on those rare occasions, when he is the
auctioneer.
While I am more partial to Kate Alcock, I do enjoy seeing David on the
show, especially since he is a wealth of knowledge. I have seen him
offer incorrect information at times, but that’s expected from anyone
that deals in antiques, even the experts. Besides, could you really
expect one to be completely informed on EVERY single item ever made
through out the centuries??? Nah, I didn’t think so!
I thank you for bringing together all this information on David and
the two shows. I look forward to seeing more content as time
goes on! You are doing a superb job, so please keep up the effort and
do realize that there are many people out in the world that appreciate
your efforts!
Take care! Keep up the wonderful work!

Jenny I enjoy this
web site. You have done a great job. I liked the pictures of
Kate and Thomas doing Flog It with David. They looked as if they were
having a great time. I have met David and I think he's a lovely
person. I hope to see him in Folkestone on Wednesday.
Kind regards, Joanne.
Hi Jenny, I went
to Folkestone last Wednesday and saw David. I took some pictures of
him. David was in fine form. He's a very good auctioneer. I was able
to chat with him and this was the third time I have seen him. He's got
a lovely smile.
Best wishes, Joanne.
Hi, hope you like
the pictures. As you can see David was in fine form, it was a
pleasure to watch him as an auctioneer he truly is an expert on the
rostrum. I was able to watch him rehearse The Bargain Hunt part of
the auction and I really enjoyed it. After David had finished
rehearsing, I asked him if I could take some photographs of him he
said please do. I also saw Mark and as they look so much alike I
asked him to pose with David which he did. I mentioned to Mark about
him looking so much like David he said "I like to be known as the
grandson'. We all had smiles on our faces. The auction went very
well, David did a beautiful job he was a pleasure to watch, a true
master. I had a lovely day and I was able to see once a again this
wonderful Bargain Hunt and Flog It expert.

Wonderful web site ! I have it on my favourites list. Extremely
well put together and funny. You must spend a lot of time on this.
Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us. I am actually a great
Paul Martin fan and I wish that someone would do the same for him as
you have for David. If you know of anything please would you let me
know. It's great to see that other people are besotted
with their favourites. My kids think that I'm pathetic but I
don't care. Watching Flog It! gives me great pleasure, lots of fun and
so much information. Keep up your good work. Christine |

A recent
discussion on the Bargain Hunt and Flog It Yahoo board brought this
comment from a Paul Martin fan.
I like David Barby too - love
the website and delighted he's a moggy lover! He's such a sweetheart
and comes across as such a gentle soul on the programme.
I replied he
was and asked to use comments here on the Fan page. This was the
reply:
Jenny, I would be
honoured if you put my comments on David's page! I do mean them
sincerely, he always comes over as being such a beautiful person.
There aren't many people on TV these days you can get those sort of
'vibes' from, but with David his sincerity simply shines through and
touches your heart. I love his smile and gentle voice. As you say
he's a gentleman in every sense of the word. I would like to met him
too. Tell him to give Algernon some extra hugs and strokes from me!
Sharman.

Dear Jenny
I fell on your site looking for a link to Nigel Smith -
Just a note to say WELL DONE - very interesting & great fun!
Continued success
Very best

Hi David
Just a short note to
say how pleased I was to be able to see you and the rest of the crew at
Great Western Auctions on Saturday 7th Aug. I was delighted to be able
to speak with you and am very glad that you enjoyed the trip to Glasgow.
Sorry I could not afford to bid for the model of the paddle steamer
"Eagle"
I along with my wife
enjoy very much the shows both Flog It and Bargain Hunt.
Thanks once again for
your kindness I really enjoyed speaking with you, hope you continue the
good work for many years to come
Kind regards
Colin Sutherland.
PS Love your web site.

Good Evening Jenny, Please can you
pass on this photo that I said I would forward to David via you? My
sister and I were lucky enough to chat with David at Charlie Ross'
auction house and even luckier to have a photo taken with David. He's
just so fabulous, isn't he? We're still chattering excitedly about it
and James Lewis also made our day, along with David, because he made
us laugh so much. Two very charming gentlemen who were kind enough to
spare their time with us!
Yours sincerely,
Christine and Josie.

Hi Jenny,
The web site is well-maintained and
interesting. You must devote a lot of time to keeping it up-to-date.
David has impressive and formidable knowledge, truly The Master. He
seems to have an intuitive feel for the values of items - difficult to
catch him out I would imagine! He also seems a charming man and comes
over as kind and genuine.
Cas. |
Hi David...
Re Flog It 2nd March at Matlock. I'm the lady who was flogging the 2
1960's cat vases. I was on the stairs with my mum and 2 children. I
just wanted to send you an email to say a big thank you to you all for
a great day. All the crew and experts were so
friendly and nice to us all especially to the children. Mum
bought a piece of Moorcroft at the sale so she was really
pleased.
Could you pass the thanks on to all concerned. With many thanks and
hope to meet up again at some auction house in the future.
Jane.
Another comment from Jane, "David is a real gentleman". |
|
Dear Jenny
I
have
just spent a very enjoyable stroll around your latest pics from
Flog It, and I love your captions, very funny and very in keeping with
Mr Barby's persona, very well done. In fact the whole site seems to
be evolving all the time.
|
|
Hello Jenny,
Your web site is very good, a lot of work has
gone into it! What about
David Barby presenting Bargain Hunt, I think he is a special person. I
think David seems to be a truly nice, kind and genuine person, although I
do not know him, he radiates a warmth and sincerity. Nice people seem to
be a rarity these days. Its refreshing to see someone like David Barby! I
always remember a famous singer being asked why he thought he had been
popular for so many years, his reply was, "stay humble"
Christine. |
Hi there Jenny,
Just want to say what a great site this is with good links and info..
David Barby is a great valuer with a great voice ;-)
Hope to see him in the future series of Flog It.
Sonia.
|
Hi Jenny,
Nice to see that the site continues and it is looking good. Just
thought I would drop you a quick note about something that happened
today.
My wife came home from shopping with a great smile on her face, she's
not very tall and was struggling to get a box of tissues from a high
shelf, when a friendly voice said 'Here, let me get that for you'.
When she looked around, she recognised the person but couldn't put her
finger on a name. 'Thanks, I know you don't I 'she said and the reply
with a laugh was 'probably', then the penny dropped and she realised
it was Mr Barby himself.
She came home grinning from ear to ear and said what a gentleman he
was, oh dear, looks like David has put me to shame, or maybe I should
go and do more shopping, mind you, I can reach the top shelf!

Heya Jen
Just wanted to say that the website is looking brilliant and I saw the
delectable dashing Mr. Barby for the first time this year on Bargain
Hunt and unfortunately he lost but oh well we can't all be perfect!
This is a wonderfully amazing site about David Barby and keep up the
good work!
Jenni. |
Jenny
Just to let you know we had a great evening with David on Saturday. I
suppose there were about 80 people there, a few of whom were very generous
indeed.
It was very interesting to watch David at work and he ran the auction
wonderfully well. Without him I am sure the total would have been not as
high as it finally turned out to be. The auction itself raised a magnificent
£3382 which far exceeded our expectations so with that and entry and drinks
we will be at about £3700.
It was very very kind of David to support us in the way he did and it was a
great pleasure to have him with us. If you are in contact with David, please
pass on our thanks and best wishes.
Best regards
Derrick Parker.

Hi Jenny
I'm more than happy to give you my thoughts about my appearance on Flog It
and of David. I can't stress enough what a very nice chap he is. I think
he's fab! A true gentleman.
I never expected to get picked, my friend and I just went along for the
fun of it and also to have a day out shopping in Harrogate. We were quite
close to the front of the queue and were selected before the valuation had
actually started. David and Anita made their way down the queue rummaging
in bags and boxes. He spotted my jug and I then had a sticker put on me
which signified that he had chosen my item to be featured. We started
filming the valuation within about half an hour of the start of the
session. No time to panic really! He was extremely friendly and really put
me at my ease.
At the auction we had a lot more time to chat. I probably monopolised him
a bit (before filming, between filming and after filming!) but he is so
knowledgeable, helpful and easy to chat to that I could have talked to him
all day. He didn't seem to mind anyway! He even went out of his way to
find a chest of drawers for me that would go with some other furniture I
have. He also gave me a tip about a chap who designed small silver
trinkets (I had attempted to buy one at the auction) but for the life of
me I cannot remember his name. If you are in contact with David I would be
very grateful if you could ask him for me and pass on my best wishes.
All I can do is tell you what you already know. That he is a lovely man
and that it was a pleasure to meet him. I even have a new found
appreciation for that brown jug following his eloquent valuation!
Best wishes
Jo.

Just a quick line to say, got to Newark
yesterday (only 30 mins. from my
home), saw David and Michael again filming for Bargain Hunt. Said a
quick hello etc. to David, he always manages to smile, bless him, even in
that cold frosty air. Anyhow Newark good as usual, spent a fortune.
All the best

|
Just to say I saw the
t-shirts on today's live Bargain Hunt and decided to have a quick look at
the site. Just a quick email to say well done, lots of info on there. I live
in Rugby (David's home town) but can't say I've ever met him, though I have
seen him around town now and then. He is my favourite expert, as you can see
he loves describing the items and he sees more than 'just a profit'.
Leady. |
|
Sorry to hound you Jenny
but I've just had a look at The Master's website and I'm wondering is the
compiler of that your good self? If so, there's one most important thing the
site lacks: a photo of Algernon, his beloved puss!
Kenneth. |
On Friday's show
David Dickinson most aptly dubbed the master 'The venerable David Barby'.
Quite right too! venerable=worthy of reverence; reverence=fear mingled
with respect. What a perfect description of The Master! A most perfect
adjective!
Kenneth. |
|
David is a thorough gentleman, he is
courteous, amenable and very warming. He has a panache and a style all his
own. He most certainly enjoys being around people who have a sense of humour
because I can tell he just loves to have fun. David Barby is right out of
the top draw and I know his career will go from strength to strength.
David.
|
|
Does David Barby have a web site??? I'm
a leetle bit obsessed with the bloke at the moment. If you could let
me know what it is I would be really happy! I love David Barby! He's a
great expert!
Jenni.
|
|
Heya Jenny, I've been looking for a David
Barby web site for aaaggeeessss and now I've found one and it's brilliant!
Just thought I'd say hi and keep up the good work! I'm quite in love with
David Barby at the moment. Well not quite, quite a lot in love with the bloke! Jenni. |
|
I don't mind David Barby, at least he
knows what he's talking about and usually buys some good things.
Diane.
|
|
David Barby is my favourite expert so
he can be on as often as he likes. Like Diane says, at least he knows what
he's talking about.

Bargain Hunt Live
26/05/03
What a
bobby dazzler of a show tonight's was. (Monday 26 May). Mr Barby managed
to look stylish in a strange colour and Mr Plant made a huge profit for
his team. That's entertainment!
Doctor Lovejoy.
I was at tonight's auction and the
atmosphere was fantastic. The auctioneer, John Nicholson, was really
entertaining and added to a great evening. But as a David Barby fan I can't
forgive Thomas for finding that games set!
The perfume bottle bought by...yours
truly! Well I had to have a souvenir of the night didn't I?
Jenny.

Has David Barby taken to wearing a wig? I
saw him on Bargain Hunt Live and he appeared to be wearing a crown topper.
'David...Take it off...You are gorgeous bald'.
Emma.
DB, gorgeous? Yes. Bald? Not quite. But
having seen him get changed in the car park for BH live, the rest of him makes
up for that!
Jenny.
NB For those of you wondering, David was
NOT wearing a wig!
|
|
Jenny there is a story behind me meeting
David Barby. Michael had promised me he would introduce me to David. True
to his word he brought David out of the green room to say hi. David is a
really lovely chap and we had a bit of a laugh - he couldn't believe I was
walking around wearing a sweatshirt with web address on - I think he was
trying to wind me and Michael up!!!
Jackie.
|
|
Can anyone tell me if the gorgeous David
Barby has an e-mail or web-site address - also does anyone know the name
and location of his auction rooms?
Bryony.
The delectable Barby Doll is now working
as an independent valuer so must be contactable somehow. Thought I'd get
him down to inspect my antique bed-head so would appreciate info on this also.
Had close-up at Flog It day in Hull recently and can confirm even more swoon
making in person - tall, broad etc and the Voice.....
Jane.
|
|
till Counting....
Anybody counting how many days we have had
David Barby on BH lately? He is one of my favourite experts but he has more or
less taken up residence in my lounge lately. And when my wife started making up
the spare bed I thought it was about time we had a change of experts.
Enigma.
I met David B today and he is a really
nice chap - very friendly - I can think of worse people to have in the
lounge!!!!
Jackie.
|
|
Barby Never Loses!
Wonder if there's any stats on which
expert has won most times or has made the most profit? My vote would go to the
knowledgeable David Barby. Anyone who watches the show with me gets subjected to
a small bet of who will win, I always pick Barby and he never lets me down. Barby
never loses!
Ginger.
You're so right! The Barby Doll is
perfect. I nominated him as the only contender to have a hope of filling David's
shoes. He is class! I'd bid for him at auction to win him for a night - what
about this for Comic Relief?
Jane.
David Barby!!!!! superb - my favourite
expert - his wit - his knowledge - what a star - why oh why didn't he take over
from David Dickinson??????
Helen.
I was also pleasantly surprised to
discover a couple of weeks back that Barby is as good an auctioneer as he is
expert.
Ginger. |
|
We had a very enjoyable 2 days taking
part in the programme and meeting the crew, the experts and the other
contestants. In particular we spent some time in the company of David Barby who is an expert on the show, although he was filming for another
programme, and he was the nicest person you could wish to meet
Adam and Stephanie Jane. |
|
The Perfect BH.
When will we see the perfect BH line-up?
Obviously DD presenting, David Barby, Philip Serell or Michael Hogben as experts
and Rupert Toovey as auctioneer.
Craig.
Has to be Dickerington, backed up by the
Barbie Doll and the Hoglett.
Emma.
I agree with Craig. Rupert is easily the
best auctioneer, and David Barby by FAR the best expert, with the Duke
presenting.
Joe.
|
|
Favourite Experts.
As a regular Bargain Hunt fan my favourite experts on the show are the
suave
and sophisticated David Barby and the most attractive Pippa Deeley.
Bryan.
David Barby is my favourite male expert too.
Gordon.
The best of the crop, it has to be David
Barby and the Burberry Gnome.
Alan.
|
|
Christmas Special 2002.
What a brilliant present! 40 minutes of pure fun and games from the Bargain
Hunt team. They were all fantastic. David Barby made a fantastic pantomime dame.
Jackie.
Well I'd go more than £13 for Barby in my Christmas stocking. Why don't they
auction him instead?
Jane.
Yes it was definitely one of the best Bargain Hunt's I've seen. It is great
to see straight laced guys such as David Barby are game for a laugh.
Stuart.
